For more than two decades, Terry and Paula Friedman of Dubuque have been involved in Divine Word College, from touching the lives of students, to committee work and service as long-time members of the board of trustees. For their consistent support and active involvement, Divine Word College honored them with the 2015 Donaghey Award for Outstanding Service, on Sunday, Sept. 27.

“We are honored to be receiving this award,” Paula said. “We are happy to play a small part in the life and mission of Divine Word College.”

Terry Friedman, president of the Friedman Group in Dubuque, and his wife Paula have worked as a team in their support of Divine Word. As members of the college’s Friends Across Nations (FAN) Club, they’ve welcomed international students into their lives since the program began in 1996. They were active in the DWC Community Relations Council, which organized the annual Spring Brunch fundraiser for more than 15 years. They were also members of the DWC Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2013.

Former DWC president, Rev. Mike Hutchins, SVD, said the couple continues a “family commitment” to the college. Terry’s parents, Larry and Renee, were great friends of Divine Word. Larry was also a member of the board of trustees and active on committees. In 1999, he was the first recipient of the Donaghey Award.

“Whether chairing an annual appeal, welcoming students to their home, or serving as English tutors, Terry and Paula’s love for the college has been genuine and concrete,” Hutchins said. “They make clear what the Rev. John Donaghey Service Award is all about.”

Fr. Donaghey, SVD, dedicated much of his life to Divine Word, first as an instructor and later as dean of students, vice president of academic affairs, president, and longtime member of the board of trustees. The award was established in 1999 to honor those who have shown a long-term commitment to DWC.
